        Biography

It is line describing movement in a given environment that is at the centre of my work. I use drawing as a process to explore this in 3 dimensional ways. Throughout my work I exploit ambiguity to create a space for the viewer to explore their own associations.

Previous work has taken the form of abstracted landscapes, using a gesso ground and the application of charcoal and ash. In these works a subtle indentation of surface, reduction of the subject to a mark or compression, builds relationships to resonate with the viewer’s own perceptions.

My new work extends this process to create temporary drawings. The new works are developed through live performance, such as brushing wood ash on paper or skating over pigmented paper, which leaves traces of movement, recording the physicality of the artist and the materials. The in-line drawings, brush and ash photograph and video piece, document the process of mark making using my body weight, impact and movement.

The resultant works are direct and rudimentary but open up new pathways for the viewer. It is significant that the marks or lines made suggest associations without initially revealing their source.

My site specific drawings, explore the possibilities of the interaction of the artist and the location. The repetition of the theme of ‘Open Curve’ explores the connection between line, body, landscape and movement.
