Artist Statement

My work explores language, the image and memory in the construction of personal narrative. In my last project Perhaps Finally Alone I played with the idea of the domestic and the domesticated. My subjects were anonymous people, soft animals and heavy textiles. I present them as objects, positioning them not above or beneath but beside each other, levelling the plane of the subject's power and creating a horizontal movement towards a new 'sensorial thing' with it's own humoristic vitality. I am interested in investigating the relationship between looking and touching, geometrical shapes and ambiguous appearance I work in studio by building sets. Fabrics are an important aspect of my work as they provide me with a bigger variety of weight, patterns and reflectivity than typical paper photographic backgrounds. The softness, the heavy weight of the fabric and the geometry of the forms I use combine to create a  suggestion  to the viewer, where resemblance and memories conflate with the visual stimulation provided by the image. I work with photography because of its capacity to reproduce accurately what is put in front of the camera and its ability to create images which contain mulitiple disjunctive narratives. It is this quality that makes photographs easy to look at and yet difficult to understand. I choose to use still life photography in order to emphasise the power of surfaces.
