Artist Statement

My strongest response is to shape. As I walk about London my eye is often caught by shapes that I see on the pavement - it might be a bright leaf in a puddle, or a discarded bit of plastic toy, or a paving stone with unusual cracks. A shape or juxtaposition of shapes that I see by chance can seem to acquire an intensity or visual significance. I have come to realise that what Francis Bacon said is right: 'All shapes have an emotional implication'. These found shapes become the starting points for my paintings. As I work in my studio, the shapes might change scale, might become colourful or muted, defined or less so. During this process I hope to learn what the shapes and their relationships mean metaphorically to me. I add a title to try to give a hint of this.
