    Artist Statement

I paint and make collage because I love the interplay between figure and ground. The surface of a canvas has often been referred to as a window, but it shares more properties with a screen – a space that contains both information and sensation. I am interested in contemporary visuality, digital overwhelm and how artists have continuously developed new languages to describe how society affects the human being and vice versa. Recently I have developed a process that combines painting and collage, which allows me to respond to images that already circulate in society. I work with fashion magazines, tearing out random image fragments and adhering them to the canvas like a puzzle. Each composition is developed through a spontaneous, intuitive process. The surfaces I create look abstract yet they are full of fault lines, crevices and folds sampled from images of the female body and architecture. Through my work, I aim to destabilise strongly editorialised content and question how we view and process images today.
