My research is located in drawing and paper-based painting and print practices.

Following John Ruskin’s proposed method of closely observing detail from nature, my working practice aims to develop critical drawing as eco-aesthetic category, drawing that may contribute to raising awareness of ecological responsibility. Much of my work is large scale and multi-part intended for installation so that the viewer can participate in the experience through spatial negotiation and real time viewing.

Currently I am developing notebook research building on the practice-based research completed in 2016 with PhD show "Jetsam" and PhD thesis "Drawing on nature- the legacy of John Ruskin's moral cosmos" (October 2016) with Lancaster University (LICA). Following on from Ruskin I am motivated by Joseph Beuys' drawings, his 'imprints' which evolved into social sculpture, environmental activism and performances. On a micro level each time I pick up litter from the beach I also perform drawing. I am seeking for further continuities and possibilities to make drawing embody environmental awareness, relying on the wider definition of drawing as gesture, action and  aesthetic category. Within this observational and multi-sensory formats of drawing provide a firm anchor, connecting past  with present, perception with imagination. I am also hoping to develop further text image, poetic integration of writing with drawing in the form of journals and notebooks.

Two installation drawings from 2012 reflect on  tensions between romantic depiction of landscape and contemporary agri- and horticulture in rural Britain ("Hortus" and "Nursery"). I also included some very early work indicative of my training in observational drawing when completing an apprenticeship in glass and porcelain painting in Bavaria.
