My work is driven by a fascination in the human condition in its most fragile state. I use distortion and disfigurement to disrupt normal figurative or portraiture to reveal the hidden self: looking beyond the mask of flesh and bone to reveal an undercurrent of raw emotions flowing beneath.  Visual intensity and contrast of palette within my work is important to me, as is the interaction of paper with mixed media to display either tension, fragility or acute distress.

Biography

My work is driven by a fascination in the human condition in its most fragile state. I use distortion and disfigurement to disrupt normal figurative or portraiture to reveal the hidden self: looking beyond the mask of flesh and bone to reveal an undercurrent of raw emotions flowing beneath.  Visual intensity and contrast of palette within my work is important to me, as is the interaction of paper with mixed media to display either tension, fragility or acute distress.

My practice is very focused on drawing. I am experimenting with materials that don't usually come together in drawing, such as felt tip pens and scotch tape. I drip paint, scribble with pens, tear off layers of paper and erase with erasers and masking tape. I try to create a cohesion with the materials, techniques and subject to push the boundaries of what a drawing is. I use paint and painting techiques as an enhancing element to my drawings, rather than as a separate activity.
