Biography

I am drawn to the structural imagery my environment and to the common patterns (or metapatterns) present in both the natural and man-made world. I began making sculptures during the 1980s whilst photographing the demolition of the steelworks environment within my home town of Consett in County Durham. As a volunteer working for a local photographic archive I was able to gain access to the demolition site and as a consequence my attentions were drawn to the numerous redundant industrial structures that littered the landscape. They were mostly architectural and geometric, pipes, cooling towers and machinery but over the years these memories have evolved to from many of the visual elements of my sculptures. I use lines and curves to build geometric forms and sequences. Simple parts that relate to each other can multiply, join and combine to create familiar structures and symmetries. I’m interested in the object as a whole, with a distinct identity but I’m also interested in the relationship of one object to another and the binary conditions reflecting my own physical and conscious makeup.
I’m fascinated by the contrasts and relationships between geometric and organic forms and the tensions between an awareness of my surroundings and my self-consciousness as the designer and physical maker with my own patterns and restrictions. For me, making sculpture an on-going dialectic that recognizes and responds to these dualistic elements but it’s also a recognition that my observation are not independent from my own physical and mental nature.
