Artist Statement

My current work centres on the use of amateur, commercial and institutional photographic archives to produce sequences of paintings that address social and historical themes through the lived experience of their subjects. I am particularly interested in employing a hybrid of the techniques, conventions and traditions of painting and photography to explore the possibilities for the re-engagement of painting with political circumstances. In that sense the work is conceived as an extension of the realist tradition. A series of paintings transcribed from an East German photograph album, culminated in the making of a short documentary film about the surviving member of a Doctor's family from the GDR. Another group of paintings transcribed from U.S. press photographs of the 'House Un-American Activities Committee' trials, examined the narrowing of political discourse in the post-war period. My intention is to critique the means by which historical events are represented, whilst attempting to convey the social implications of those events as vividly as possible.
