Artist Statement

David Cleary (b.1992, Hull UK) is an artist and curator based in North Wales. He is the current Learning & Engagement Curatorial Fellow at MOSTYN, Llandudno.

Previously the Learning and Exhibitions Coordinator at Humber Street Gallery, his curatorial practice is rooted in learning, accessibility to contemporary arts in remote geographies and artist CPD. Previous projects include Fruit Factory Network, an artist development project for early career Hull artists, alongside exhibition related learning and public events programmes. He has supported the delivery of major exhibitions which include Leo Fitzmaurice, Enjoy Civic Life (2021), Jamie Crewe, Solidarity & Love (2020) and Sarah Lucas, Power Of Women (2017).

His artistic practice uses painting, drawing and writing to produce figurative works which feature bodies queer bodies in private space. These works are a product of attempts to understand the social systems which bring us into contact with others and how much of ourselves we are permitted and choose to reveal within specific spaces in time.
