Claire Mc Dermott's MRBS asks us what do we know about plants.  She reflects on what has been planted in our conscious verses our deep experience of plants.  With her detailed paintings and drawing of everyday flowers, not in high bloom, but on the wane, her hope is that we re-see, beyond our prejudices, an image of something unfamiliar: Unfamiliar because the flower in her paintings are both magnified and spent, an unfamiliar combination for the viewer.  The water colour paintings are botanically correct showing the structure and function of plants at a scale that a bee may observe.  Her current project titled - Identity, derives from microscopic studies of plant anatomy of spent Michaelmas daisies.

The meeting between Mc Dermott’s paintings and sculpture is located at the formation of petals when those petals progress into contorted yet exquisite forms, captivating yet unnoticed:  Drawing us into the wider social issue regarding what we might consider ‘deformed and what we accept as ‘beauty’ within the distortion.

Her adaptation of plants continue through drawn studies and researches into their ecology and habitats, while she transform her findings through sculpture.  These contemporary sculptures with their symbolic components reflect and incorporate her urban environment.

Mc Dermott was born / lives and works in London, who studied Historic Decorative Crafts at De Montfort University, Lincoln. Worked for Sir Dick Reid of York and for Alan Martin’s studios of Twickenham as a wood and clay sculptor. She studied RHS Horticulture - Plant anatomy / microscopic work at Harrow College and Botanical Illustration at The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

She received a Silver-Gilt medal for her water colours painting at the 2015 New RHS London Botanical Art Show and exhibited at the Mall Galleries with Royal institute of painters in water colours (RI) exhibition.

Mc Dermott was shortlisted to take part in the Sculpture Symposium 2016 and the AA2A Project at Chemsford College 2017. She gave an artist talk at the Sculpture conference at the Royal Society of British Sculptors in 2017 and started this year with her solo exhibition titled; Illusion at Space2 Gallery in Watford Museum. Her work is held at Cill Rialaig Arts Centre, Ireland and at Riverhill Himalayan Gardens in Kent.
