I work intuitively with an intriguing array of materials including painting; collage, ceramics and works incorporating found materials and textiles to form abstract artworks. The materials I am attracted to hold great significance, from the handcrafted, found and re-appropriated to the mass-produced. I am interested in questions surrounding their relative perceived hierarchies and values; and explore contextual connections through playful enquiry - drawing on ideas of formalism, expressionism and aesthetics, feminism, process and labour.
These concerns are developed through practical experimentation in the studio where I test a variety of techniques to explore different methods of manipulating materials and surfaces; emphasising forms through gestural engagement; playing with the conflicting intensities of quick gestures and labour-intense processes.
With these works I create a space between ‘fact and fiction’, remembered and imagined, where everyday materials and objects lose their original functionality and find themselves embedded in new scenarios, evoking memories and exploring the transient nature of life concurrent with the longevity of cultural memory.
I use my role as a curator (for Salt+Powell) to build on my arts practice (like another stand) treating curating very much as a creative act. I find that inevitably there is an aesthetical overlap between my individual arts practice and that of curating and I use this to enquire into different modes and methods of presenting work to audience, through visual aesthetic language and interpretation.
