    Artist Statement

My work is an ongoing observation, recording and collection of the ruderal - plants that grow on waste ground. Often bruised and torn, these are not quality botanical specimens, nor are they rare or sought after - they are nomadic roadside wayfarers.

The intention of documenting something of this insignificant habitation found at the edge of pathway or boundary is to capture a fragment of the place that is imprinted onto the landscape by movement to and fro, past and present. Plants become metaphors for passing time and presence, connecting this place of journey to the previous journeys of others.

Print and drawing predominate in my practice and through this processing of the organic material, using graphite, ink, printing press or screenprint, the work unfolds in a cycle of experimentation and development. Using the methodology of the botanist, collected plants are pressed and later passed through the printing press. The first impression is a stark definition in black and white where the plant structure is embossed onto the paper. When the plant matter is removed a second impression from the press resembles an antique engraving where the details of the plant are described in the residual ink.
