Artist Statement

I started my career in Hand Embroidery in September 2012 when I joined the Royal School of Needlework Degree course in Hand Embroidery.
Throughout my three years on the degree, I learnt the traditional English embroidery techniques and was invited to be involved with a number of professional projects; including work for fashion and ecclesiastical embroidery.

Since graduating from the degree I have been working as a freelance hand embroiderer. I work regularly for the Nicola Jarvis Studio stitching Nicola's embroidery designs and have also had the opportunity to work on a number of private commissions and daily work including; stitching film costume and details for a winter wedding dress. More recently I have also been teaching embroidery workshops and am also soon to release my first embroidery kit.

In November 2017 I was awarded the third prize in the Hand & Lock Prize for Embroidery competition, for the textile art open category. The piece I entered was my self-portrait tilted 'Put on Love'. I learnt a lot about my stitching style through this piece and since the exhibition, I have been inspired to create more embroidered portraits with the hope to create an exhibition of my work.

I am passionate about social justice and am keen to use my 'art's' platform to encourage and uplift others. In particular, I am interested in the way our upbringing and teaching shapes our outlook on life and I hope to use my work to promote thought and discussion in this area.

I am also passionate about supporting the sustainable fashion movement. I am often looking for ways in my own life and practice that can influence and create change, in a way that supports an industry that is focused on people first.
