U.K born, I spent my early years in Australia, and have lived for extended periods in both countries, as well as in India and the USA. I trained at Saint Martin’s School of Art, London and Claremont Technical School of Art in Perth, Western Australia.

I have been exhibiting since 2001, with over a dozen solo and 40 group shows during that time. My work is held in private and corporate collections worldwide.

I was a finalist in the Celeste Art Prize 2006 (U.K); the Salon des Refuses at the S.H Ervin Gallery 2013 and the Paddington Art Prize 2014 in Sydney; and as Sweet+Shore (my ongoing art collaboration with scientist Dr. Jesse Shore) the Adelaide Perry Drawing Prize 2017 in Sydney, the 2017 Lethbridge 10000 Small Scale Art Award in Brisbane and the 2017 Lloyd Rees Art Prize at Colville Gallery in Hobart. For more information on Sweet+Shore please visit us at Sweet+Shore are represented by Colville Gallery in Hobart, Australia.

There are several streams to my practice, including miniature landscapes, and abstract works, but my main focus in recent years has been large industrial-themed paintings particularly of oil tankers and bulk carriers.

‘The source material I'm using - industrial sites, oilrigs, tankers - are in themselves powerful images and seemingly quite brutal. I'm trying to depict the inherent beauty and majesty I see in them however: their at times, cathedral-like, exultant qualities, and have often used a soft, almost pastel palette to convey the poetic nature of what I'm trying to depict.

There is also a hidden meaning to the tanker paintings, which are named after various gods and goddesses, stars and galaxies. For me they are vessels or carriers of spirit and myth in that they carry a secret story or narrative with them as well as their cargo. They are each one an entity, a living spirit in their own right.’

" ...these are, quite simply, profound paintings." Nicholas Usherwood, 2010  Author, Critic and Features Editor, Galleries Magazine U.K

      CV & Education

"Recalling the shimmering late works of J.M.W. Turner, Penman Sweet manipulates oil paint with the subtlety of watercolour..."  Annemarie Lopez 2012  Arts writer for Australian Art Review, The Sydney Magazine (SMH) and The Week UK

" ...these are, quite simply, profound paintings." Nicholas Usherwood, 2010  Author, Critic and Features Editor, Galleries Magazine U.K

"The handling of oil paint is evocative, startling and refreshing, challenging the distinctions between the painter's and the photographer's art, as well as between abstract and figurative image-making. Her forms suggest other forms, her structures other scales and ways of seeing; her scenes hint at other, yet vaster landscapes, of the world and of the mind." Dr Sue Roe, 2007 Critic and author of 'The Private Lives of the Impressionists' and 'Gwen John: A Life'

"By using fine layers of oil paint the living qualities of paint take on their own characteristics independent of the subject, so that the subject is not the subject of these paintings. Instead, Anne Penman Sweet's creations fulfil our need for 'moments of stillness'" Dr Angela Summerfield, 2008  Art Historian, Author and Art Critic for The Spectator
