Artist Statement

I have always been fascinated by the human form in art; my art practice addresses the exploration and representation of the human body in painting, photography, plaster, and ceramics. The body in art has had many different definitions, purposes and guises. In the late 20th century the body became a central theme in post-modernist art in order to destabilise cultural patriarchal white dominance. Over the past forty years, the marginalisation of bodies of difference whether it is difference of gender, sexuality, ethnicity, or any other marginal group, has been challenged, subverted and exposed. This has given artists today a rich archive of building blocks to further disrupt the socially constructed subjective views of self and the other. My work takes the form of sculpture and installation; I create abstract figurative artworks that investigate how the body can used as a site for life experience more precisely a the experience of an impaired or disabled body. Inspired by Julia Kristeva’s Abject my work interrogates and subverts traditional figuration in sculpture. More recently my work has developed into installations that allow the viewer to put themselves in the position of disability or impairment.
