My artistic practice centres on my fascination with people and cultures and I find much of my inspiration abroad, most recently in India. I observe figures in their environment as they go about their daily business and endeavour to capture the interaction of people with both others around them and the space that they move through. The unwitting subjects reveal themselves in movement and are captured in the moment.  Figures are defined by their poise and characterised by their clothing. Most recently I have focused on beach life, capturing the interaction of families and friends and whilst I draw and paint individuals, the compositional arrangement forms a pattern, repetitions occur, narratives emerge and the individuals form a whole. Whether inspired by my own community or the communities I find on my travels my work offers a fleeting insight into the essence of a culture. I mainly work in oils and charcoal, blocking out backgrounds with thick brushstrokes, allowing charcoal lines to show through the paint, creating a sense of energy, movement and immediacy.
