Artist Statement

My work explores the transformative effect of light, investigating mark-making and referencing landscape through drawing, painting and collage. I aim to create works that evoke the experience of visual phenomena – of atmospheric light and luminosity – whilst drawing attention to their making, their edges and surfaces, materials and processes.

I make painted surfaces through a range of experimental means, some are ink or oil soaked, marked by etching and scoring.  Some are dipped and rollered with household or spray paint then abraded back to reveal the layers.  I collate and sift, select and combine, layering, revealing, concealing and occasionally wrapping with thread to articulate the surface of my work. Some fragments of paper are a decade or more old before they find their place in a composition and the search for the one that provides balance and contrast is addictive.

I am interested in the ‘objectness’ of painting - the relationship between the surface of my paintings with their sometimes oblique reference to landscape and the physicality of the pieces and whether it is possible to hold these two elements in balance.
