Biography

My work comes out of encounters. Encounters with objects, with physical and non-physical things; those which are ordinary, immaterial, ephemeral and discarded, but full of possibilities. My work explores those possibilities in both the visual and the conceptual realms of the plastic arts, from a stance that is removed from the actual work; involved in the making but not involved in the judging. It is important that the making of the work is not regulated by aesthetic preconceptions, nor representational functions or seeking harmonic compositions; so that there is an openness to the work in generating new meanings. My work explores the visual representations of randomness, liberation, intuition, associations and points of intersection. It plays with the physical properties of the materials. I use measuring, counting, numbering, tracing, accumulating, sticking down, sewing, drawing and painting as processes to explore the possibilities of what the work can be. Such engagement can be mechanical and repetitive, yet contemplative and performative. The application of repetitive processes and tasks in the creation of the work represent to me, a possibility to create unpredictable outcomes, which express nothing and can provide a new experience. There is a sense of continuity from a piece of work to the next although each piece can also be seen (and exist) individually. The serial aspect of my work as led me to explore the book as a format and often demands the work to be resolved as a succession of images (drawings, prints, photocopies, photographs, paintings). There is not always an idea to start with; ideas often develop from playfulness and from the physical process of the making, open to success and failure.
