Artist Statement

Alli Sharma's gestural paintings transform the overlooked into substantial painterly icons. Taking an ambiguous glance back at her own past and revealing the emotional investments we make provide a wide range of subjects for painting including the Northern Soul, working-class dance craze of the 1970s; the women of 1950s social realist cinema and domestic ornaments. Also, recurrently drawn to representations of animals points to our relationship with other creatures. Her series of bat paintings, for instance, examine the cultural demonisation of a harmless animal that is often irrationally feared. Pampered, bejewelled dogs and white, magic show rabbits also feature in paintings that respond to an unsettling sentimental desire. Small black and white paintings based on postcards from the London Zoo archive combine both our emotional attachment to the postcard as souvenir, memento and keepsake, together with melancholy images that witness a chimps tea party, lions behind bars and a hippo in a concrete cage.
