Biography

I am a visual artist, working predominantly within the field of painting. This practice has grown out of an enquiry into aesthetic absorption: both its theoretical and practical implications, drawing on the theories of Denis Diderot and Michael Fried.

The paintings I make explore the idea and possibility of how an artwork might intervene in the ‘normal’ regime of vision. Here the relationship of beholder to painting is addressed by attempts to toy with the viewing experience by using materials such as silk and paint mediums combined with paint and photography. Some of these works are produced in groups as a type of hybrid serialization I describe as abstract narrative. Here each canvas is analogous to a word or phrase, sharing some form of dialogue between them. As such these works involve a kind of thinking inside and outside the work reinforced by the way they are put together.

What has become clear to me is the importance of the position of the studio within my practice. Daniel Buren highlighted how Brancusi talked about the contradiction between the work and the way the work was shown (2007). This sums up to me why I am producing group works, because together they mitigate this contradiction. This compromise Buren describes as works that are ‘torn from their context’ (of the studio) as losing their meaning (1971), which he sees as ‘the unspeakable compromise of the portable work’ (ibid). What these works do is, to some extent, extend the setting of the studio as site where the dialogue between the works emerges, and through the grouping, work to retain some of the context of their original construction.

Currently I am a part time practice led PhD candidate at Chelsea College of Arts, University Arts London, where I have been a sessional lecturer. My research practice examines the aesthetic experience of absorption in painter to painting relationships through a collaborative address to and from practice. I have also been a member of Paint Club, having helped run events that work toward building communities that critically engage with painting.

I am also working on an Arts Council England, Grants for the Arts funded painting practice and curatorial R&D project called ‘Suspicious Minds’.
