Biography

THE WORK IS THE WORK

I am a visual artist, working predominantly with painting. This practice has grown out of a process of exploring aesthetic absorption: my own and that of the beholder. By aesthetic absorption I mean aesthetics that fully capture my attention (drawing on the theories of Denis Diderot and Michael Fried) where the paintings I make become an extract, or a distillate of this experience.

The relationship of beholder to painting is further addressed by attempts to obfuscate the viewing experience. Materials such as mylar, wax, silk and paint mediums are used as devices, tools of absorptive strategies in an attempt at toying or interfering with this viewing experience.

Sometimes included in this practice is a tracing or documenting of process, for example I often use photographs of my paint palettes within these works, this goes to create a visual narrative albeit in an abstract sense, that potentially becomes a means of entry into the realm of the painter-beholder for the spectator, or painting-beholder.

I am currently a practice led PhD candidate (part time) at Chelsea College of Art and Design, University Arts London, where I have also been a sessional lecturer. My research practice examines the aesthetic experience of absorption in painter to painting relationships through a collaborative address to and from practice.

I am also an member of Paint Club, having helped run events that work toward building communities that critically engage with painting.
