I’m a multidisciplinary artist working with drawing, film, photography collage and painting.
Cutting, editing, rearranging, juxtaposing, takes me to that place of disconnection where images unmake and make themselves. I’m interested in the images of pop cultural history, the domestic; magazines, movies, family snaps, postcards – vintage printed material in vibrant technicolour, tinted or mis-calibrated CMYK popping discordantly, soft black & white photography matte and warm with age, domestic photographs foxed and faded; the pre-digital texture of print technology from a past age.
Collage can merge into drawing as a process, and then again into the digital editing of found moving image. A brief side trip takes me through a compulsive period of painting, and then I’m riffling through old papers and magazines and I’m cutting again. Patterns and repetitions appear, images retain or release their charge, strange consonances swim in and out of focus.
I play with making strange the ultra familiar, and disrupting the unconscious stream of ideology through imagery in which we all swim. My processes are laborious and time-consuming, a labour-of-love.
