Mask of an Old God, 2019

Marianne Walker

graphite pencil on sculpted paper-clay 2019

This three-dimensional drawing is in the form of a mask, with nose. It is based on the fabled mask of Agamemnon discovered by Heinrich Schliemann. The graphite has been used as a sculptural tool to lay down a skin across the surface of the mask. This layer of pencil reveals the pitted and damaged surface of the mask even as it conceals it. The metallic shine of the graphite is a reference to the gleaming gold of the original.
