Liz Sergeant, Sharing Charlotte, 2012

Part of a series of on-going work inspired by activist, suffragist and social reformer Charlotte Despard (1844-1936). Near to where Charlotte Despard lived and worked, there is a council estate with a road named in her honour. Considered the most appropriate place to share her story, campaign leaflets were distributed to around 40 passers-by.

Amelia Beavis-Harrison, SOS, 2017

In 2016 SOS Rasisme, the Norwegian branch of the global activist organisation, was taken to court accused of fraud. The case was brought to trial after a series of articles were published in the newspaper Dagbladet and subsequent evidence was handed to local politicians, by the newspaper. Dagbladet accused the organisation of wrongfully gaining access to government funding and diverting funds to support Communism.

This film centres around an interview with one of the members of SOS Rasisme that was taken to court. The interview brings to light the story of the accused and its distinct differences to that of the newspaper. During the interview accusations against Dagbladet are posed including the stealing of documents and supporting an anti-Communist agenda.

Liz Sergeant, Speaking of Charlotte, 2012

'Speaking of Charlotte' is one of a series of works inspired by activist, suffragist and social reformer, Charlotte Despard (1844-1939), who began campaigning in her fifties and continued until her death aged 95, despite being imprisoned in Holloway twice in her sixties. Her inspiring and optimistic message - that age doesn't matter, that it's never too late to make a difference - is communicated through performative scenarios which draw upon historical references to activism made relevant for today: the campaign leaflet, the bill poster, the marching banner and the rallying speech.
