Five reasons why you might need to review your public liability insurance

As your art practice grows, so does your exposure to risk.

Where there’s blame there’s a claim, goes the saying. And the UK seems no less immune to the thriving compensation culture.

If through your Art practice and activities you have any contact (either in your studio, in a public space or at third-party premises) with the public (including clients and contractors) and they are injured, or their property is damaged as a result of your actions, you could face a hefty legal bill and compensation costs.

It’s why public liability insurance, though not a legal requirement, can often be incredibly important.

In addition, circumstances change, it is important that you review your levels of public liability insurance to make sure you’re covered should the worst happen.

So, here are five reasons why you might need to review your public liability insurance:

1. You take your art activities on the road

Do you have exhibitions, run events, deliver workshops? If so, you could be held liable if an attendee at the event injures themselves as a result of your actions.

2. You move into new premises

When working from home you may never have had members of the public visiting (although that doesn’t mean you should not have public liability cover for when you’re visiting clients). Now you have your own separate premises, chances are you’re likely to have visitors. If they should fall and injure themselves when on your premises, you could be held liable.

3. Your clients demand it

Some organisations who employ freelance artists and art professionals demand that they have public liability insurance as a condition of working for them. Public liability will cover you should you inadvertently damage your client’s property while on a visit.

4. Does it cover what you do?

As Artists and Art Professionals your activities vary and change and so does the risk and potential liability. That’s why Axisweb Membership provides Free Public Liability Insurance to cover the activities of Artists and Art Professionals.

5. Are you paying too much?

As a Charity with a Professional Membership we can negotiate better collective deals than an Artist or Art Professional working individually. As such we have been able to incorporate FREE Public Liability Insurance and FREE Professional Indemnity Insurance with Membership. Saving Artists and Art Professionals hundreds of pounds per year.
