Axisweb films: Birmingham
Elly Clarke
As part of our profile of Birmingham's art scene, we filmed interviews with Elly Clarke, Stryx, Grand Union, Eastside Projects and Ikon Gallery
In February 2013 Lesley and Julian from the Axisweb team paid a flying visit to Birmingham. There they discovered a vibrant, multi-layered art scene which includes organisations as diverse as established galleries, artist-led studios and nomadic arts projects. Here are the interviews we filmed that day.
Ikon Gallery
Founded in the 1960s and celebrating its 15th year in Brindleyplace, Ikon Gallery is the most established contemporary art space in Birmingham. Newly appointed curator Stuart Tulloch gave us the the low-down on the kind of artists and projects they work with.
Eastside Projects
Eastside Projects is the main hub for contemporary artists in Birmingham. We spoke to Associate Director Ruth Claxton about setting up and maintaining such an important artist-led project.
Grand Union
What do you do if there aren't enough studios? Set up your own of course! Cheryl Jones talks to us about getting things done at Grand Union.
Stryx
Recent graduate Aly Grimes tells us about running Stryx, one of Birmingham's newest artist-led spaces.
FRAME_
We talk to Elly Clarke about moving beyond the confines of the white cube and her attempt to stimulate Birmingham's commercial art scene with her new project FRAME_.
