Woburn Abbey Gardens
Woburn ARTBEAT is an annual project now in its third year where Woburn Village and Woburn Abbey join together to promote high quality original art by turning the village into an art gallery from the 6th April until the 27th April and a prominent sculpture exhibition in the gardens of Woburn Abbey, from the 6th April until the 31st August.
This is a non profit making event. The aim is for Woburn ARTBEAT to fund art projects in local schools and sponsor at least one artist a year to study and develop specific skills. We are currently working with artists to create a set of educational booklets on the design and development process of art across all the different mediums.
Woburn Abbey, home to one of the most important private collections of sculpture, paintings, ceramics, glass and furniture in the country, has long been the residence of many important patrons of the arts. It was here, in the eighteenth century, that the fourth Duke of Bedford commissioned from Canaletto over twenty paintings and, in the nineteenth century, that the sixth Duke commissioned a version of Canova’s The Three Graces. Most recently, the present Duke and Duchess of Bedford, avid collectors of contemporary art, has continued this historic patronage by opening up the gardens of Woburn to hold annual exhibitions of contemporary sculpture.
