Independent curator
Co-director, The Royal Standard, Liverpool
I am an emerging curator and co-director of The Royal Standard, an artist led gallery and studio provider in Liverpool. For me, being a curator goes hand in hand with my art practice; it is something I have always done alongside my own work throughout my education and more recently.
The latest show 'Sale' at The Royal Standard has transformed the white walls of the gallery into an ‘art superstore’ packed with hundreds of artworks from some of the most exciting artists from the UK and beyond. 'Sale' has removed the mystery and exclusiveness of the commercial art world and instead laid the artwork on a plate for the buyer. There are also constant special offers and promotions to tempt people into buying that ‘must have’ artwork. 'Sale' also challenges the prices based on the ranking of the artists at any given time so prices change as artists’ profiles soar and dive. I’m not sure how I would describe my curatorial approach, I guess I see it as an artwork in itself and like much of my work I like to keep it open and let it vary from piece to piece.
