Independent curator
Ele Carpenter is a curator, artist and researcher working within the field of visual arts and new media culture in the public realm. Her practice involves curating context specific programmes of contemporary art, film and workshops in collaboration with artists, filmmakers, universities, galleries and arts agencies. She is currently a Research Fellow at HUMlab and Bildmuseet, Umea University, Sweden.
Ele completed her PhD with CRUMB, University of Sunderland, 2008, exploring the relationship between politicised socially engaged and new media art. The research involved curating RISK: Creative Action in Political Culture (2005), CCA Glasgow; and has led to the development of the Open Source Embroidery project www.open-source-embroidery.org.uk
As an Associate Curator, Ele has worked with Connecting Principle (2007), www.ncl.ac.uk/connectingprinciple; CCA:Glasgow (2003-2005), PVA Media Lab (2004); and the Star and Shadow Cinema Collective (2002 – 2007). From 1997-2002 Ele was curator of the Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art www.ngca.co.uk, Sunderland, and instigated many major exhibitions, including co-curating Nothing with Graham Gussin.
