Artist Statement
I take photographs and make textworks, usually in response to historically and politically resonant locations which I explore over an extended period.
My most recently exhibited works were made in Krems an der Donau, Austria, whilst I was Artist-in-Residence, Galerie Stadtpark Krems (2002 to 2004).
The first series of photographs was made in and around Stein Prison (interior and exterior views of the prison, and landscapes).
The second series, a work-in-progress, reflects on the countryside around Krems and elsewhere in Lower Austria.
The third series was made at the Krems-Mautern bridge spanning the Danube. These more architectural photographs mark a departure from my earlier practice of working almost exclusively as a landscape artist.
Japanese Landscapes was made in 2000 whilst I was Kamiyama Artist in Residence in Tokushima Prefecture, Japan. In this series I reflect on the 'concretised' landscapes of Kamyama, a rural district on the island of Shikoku in Western Japan.
Earlier working locations include the redundant military testing site at Orfordness, England (postwar landscapes); historical sites in Budapest; towns, villages and countryside in southern Germany (German Landscapes); places associated with the Holocaust in Austria, the Baltic States, France, Germany, Poland and Switzerland (Remains - Landscapes of the Holocaust).
Individual photographs and textworks, and combined images (diptychs, triptychs and polyptychs), are incorporated into larger series for exhibitions and publications.
I also give lectures and lead workshops in colleges in Great Britain and mainland Europe.
