Artist statement

Concepts
Painter concerned with visual perception. Formal notions of light and movement within the second dimension. In addition, the concept of illusion and double meaning are particularly important. The notion that we may receive two contrasting visual experiences from a single visual stimulant. I am interested in playing with ideas of extremes and visual confusion - a kind of "terrible beauty".

Influences
Natural phenomenon, optical art, abstract, plasticity, transparency, film noir, literary and cinematic devices.

Career path

Painter (Masters from the Slade in 2000). I have exhibited nationally and abroad.  Recent projects include residencies, commissions, a touring exhibition, and working with architects on public art design commissions.

My practice is heavily based on literary research.  I have been a Part-Time Lecturer and Visiting Lecturer on various BA courses. Co-author of 'Shibusa - Extracting Beauty' examining Japanese aesthetics, synergy between music and painting and hand skills versus/high-tech approaches to art practice (published by University of Huddersfield Press (ISBN-13: 978-1-86218-101-4) published in March 2012.

Practice based in Yorkshire.

Works in a variety of private, corporate and public collections.
