Artist statement
Concepts
I work as a modeller and carver forming sculptural works in bronze and stone, and have over twenty years experience of working in the public realm. Enhancing public space is my primary concern, integrating sculptural design into the urban environment to provide points of interest and focus that create a sense of individual place. Composition and design are essential elements at the heart of my work, and a particular specialisation is cast, modelled and carved relief.
A number of my works have evolved from a public consultation/exhibition process and I am keen to involve others in the process of development. As a result, I have worked closely with artists, architects and other design professionals in the realisation and implementation of sculptural/decorative projects. Concepts for works develop from indepth investigation and research, and generally begin with drawing and model-making. At this developmental phase, I seek input and response to further enrich the preliminary design process. I use Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator CS5.5, and models are produced from paper, wood, or plaster. If required, visualisations of schemes can also be generated using photographic montage.
My most recently completed public work is a four figure bronze composition on a carved Bath stone base for the World Health Organisation in Geneva, Switzerland, and this is my first international sculptural commission. This work resulted from winning an international design commission, and a copy of the work is planned for a site in America. Apart from producing public realm work, I form carved stone and bronze pieces, often to large scale, for my own progression and development which I exhibit. I also love drawing, producing a small annual output of hillside drawings using chalks, crayon and pastel.
Influences
My sculptural influences derive from a love of classical Greek sculpture.
