Artist statement
ConceptsThe subject matter of my work is the 'interior' and its objects and structures. Tables, chairs and staircases together with domestic objects, bowls, jugs, coffee-pots are used in conjunction with projected light or video to explore our own interior worlds of memory and imagination. The solid domestic furnishings might represent the contents of the conscious mind which is occasionally irradiated by some source - from the outside, from nature, or perhaps from the unconscious - which transforms the view. A recent video installation, 'Nocturne', in which a large table bearing carved vessels is traversed in real time by a video projection of the full moon creating ever-changing shadow combinations, marks a new interest in combining the forms of outer space with domestic imagery, which I am also exploring in charcoal drawings.
