Artist statement

My practice is primarily concerned with painting but has also included video and collaborative projects. I am currently working with images from the website of institutional buildings which relate to my own autobiography. I am interested in the locations both virtual and real where private and cultural memory coincide. Although these are not my images they depict places of common experience which are at once intimately known and totally other. The buidings are of camps, barracks, living quarters and prisons which structure and contain the lives of the inhabitants. Through the painting process the image is stripped back and barely rendered which implies both the fragility of memory and the spaces of forgetting. Past projects have involved collaboration with a weaver 'Techniques of Memory', curatorship 'Fabrications, Painting and the Decorative', and inclusion in artist research, 'Pearl Street Projects' in New York.
