Artist statement
...I am interested in the concept of the artist as researcher, someone who utilises fieldwork techniques familiar to visual anthropology, sociology and geographical studies. This approach developed from research exploring geographical and social issues specific to border regions.
Borders have been prevalent throughout Paul's practice, in terms of geography, language, and the swiftness at which one can change from being a citizen to being a foreigner.
Paul is interested in how art can reveal and extend the performative dimension of fieldwork. His work is a constellation of social, local and temporary encounters, dialogues, mapping and navigation.
