Artist statement
We live in a world that is constantly changing and evolving even the things we take for granted as always being there are constantly in flux. This is the flux that Kate Hammersley captures in her work. Transient moments such as a word spoken in passing, a lightning strike or a shifting horizon line are sources of inspiration in her work which plays on our sensory perception of two and three dimensions, the visual and the tactile, the real and the implied.
Working primarily in drawing and sculpture, using a wide variety of media from silverpoint drawing to ceramics, the process of making is an important part of her work.
Since 2002 she has been creating an on-going worldwide series of temporary text installations which feature text cut out of local newspapers. The interventions are photographed in situ with the photograph acting as a lasting document of the transitory action.
