Artist statement

My practice explores the role of noise in the built environment; I am particularly interested in how to make use of those visual and aural signals that we normally block out or ignore. The end result might be a sound installation, a composition, performance or public intervention.

I define noise as unwanted signal – ever present, but rarely regarded as useful. In a world of information and consumer overload, I am fascinated with how I can use my practice to shift negative perceptions of noise, to discover and embrace the wealth of sonic detail living inside the urban drone. By reframing the way noise is heard through a mediated listening process and associated performative gestures or visual stimulus, I ask the listener to re-contextualise their experience of everyday sounds, and to prioritise listening over the dominant visual sense.
