Artist statement
My practice considers where our disenchanted, secularised world a sense of the religious fails to be suppressed, either through unacknowledged ideological attachments (a dogmatic sense of what is correct or true) or through the seductive, mesmerising appeal of contemporary art.
The work arises from a fascination with the rhetoric of the believer, and this subject matter is then reconfigured for the specific situation for which I make my work. I explore where the points of convergence are between the religious context and the post-Christian, post-ideological context of contemporary art and culture.
I often start with the writing or collecting of text, and my practice includes performance to video, drawing and installation.
I graduated from the MFA at Goldsmiths in 2009 and have since exhibited both in the UK and abroad. I organise 'Peer Sessions', a monthly peer critique group for postgraduate artists. This involves exhibitions, screenings and will include a reading group alongside the peer critique meetings.
