Artist statement

I am inspired by the painterly process and its relation to abstraction, and feel passionate about engaging with the subject of borders, edges and peripheries.

I have always been drawn to places which could be described as borderlands, geographically and psychologically but also which have been rendered throughout history by painters and writers. For example I explored and documented the region which was home to the romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich, spending four years in Berlin and on the Baltic island of Rügen.

Since 2002 I have been based in Suffolk to see with my own eyes the locations where John Constable, the 19 th century landscape painter and W.G. Sebald (1944-2001), the German writer, had lived and worked.
