Artist statement
Haward uses digital and low fi media to create interventions and installations in response to various sites, buildings and spaces with the aim of making physical and imaginative links between past present and future. Haward seeks to create tensions between the sensed world, our voyeuristic tendencies and the distancing power of seeing the present framed by different media.
The background to much of Haward’s work is an interest in our responses to the urban environment. Books like Pallasmaa’s 'The Eyes of the Skin', and 'Invisible Cities' by Italo Calvino have influenced the form and the content of her interventions and installations. More recent work has been inspired by Harraway’s Cyborg Manifesto and a desire to create a picture of what the future might look like.
Haward has worked with found materials e.g. peeling wall paper, foil, card, books, and shadows and have used video, photography and sound, in an attempt to both formulate a response to the lived-in-ness of the space and to reveal something unexpected about it, as well as constructing new objects created in response to site and history.
