Artist statement
Concepts
My work is made for buildings. I aim to introduce colour, pattern, interesting light effects or specific subject matter to a place. I work mostly in glass and have always used techniques that are compatible with modern building methods. Most of my work has been commissioned for public buildings and it ranges from small stained glass chapel windows, to screens and windows, to colour schemes for hospital departments.
Career path
I chose a foundation course at The Central School of Art & Design (1977-78) where I could also study stained glass. I subsequently realized that I needed to study Fine Art, as the design and thinking behind the work has always been more important to me than technique. I did a Fine Art Degree at Trent Polytechnic (1979-82) followed by an M.A. in Glass at The Royal College of Art (1983-85). I set up my own studio in 1986, with my first public commission awarded in the same year. I took the decision to expand my studion in 2000, to enable more of the manufacturing to take place in house and to continue my investigations into the use of enamel on glass. To date, I have completed over 70 public commissions, many of which have included a participatory or community element.
