Initially worked as an Architectural Assistant for the Greater London Development Plan with the County Borough of West Ham Architects Department.
Studied photography at the South-East-Essex Technical College after being a Senior Photographer with Army Public Relations in Cyprus in the 1950's during the period of the EOKA campaign. Working on a daily basis alongside international war photographers' and journalists. Producing photographs for local and national press publication and for the Imperial War Graves Commission. This included photographing the funerals of other teenaged soldiers. Started exhibiting hard edged abstract paintings influenced by the introduction of acrylic paint and medium.
Examination qualifications from the Institute of British Photographers and the City and Guilds Institute at a time when photographic training was intensely theory based. During a long career have also held the Associate of the Royal Photographic Society and a Fellowship with the British Institute of Professional Photographers'. In addition to being a committee member of the Association for Historical and Fine Art Photography was also a judge for the main category of the Ilford Photographer of The Year Award. Studied photojournalism at the London College of Printing and film making at East Ham Technical College.
In a career of professional photography was latterly the Chief Photographer for the Royal Commission on The Historical Monuments of England, managing a department of twenty-five colleagues, photographers', darkroom, and clerical staff. All working to the highest standards of photographic recording and archive conservation. The work was available for public access, inventory publications, and accessioning into the archive of The National Monument's Record in Swindon, which contains many of thousands of my own negatives.
Also involved with many high profile internal and external projects, which included the preliminary outline for the Images of England survey of photographs taken by members of the public. Other major Royal Commission projects involved the recording of mediaeval wall paintings in association with the Courtauld Institute, photographic recording, on a continuous basis, of the mediaeval glass conservation in the York Minster glass workshops, and recording the progress of archaeological excavations beneath York Minster during its restoration.
A major personal project was an exploratory photographic survey of the working studios of high profile international contemporary artists. This resulted in national press coverage and an exhibition at the Victorian artist's studio of Frederick Lord Leighton, in Kensington.
Publication of a considerable number of technical and general illustrated articles in professional photographic journals both here and abroad, Australia, USA, Germany. The Amateur Photographer magazine made my career the subject of an article on street photography, which is a long held interest. This interest was the basis for a project, under the auspices of North Wiltshire District Council, in which a selected group of young people photographed the retail businesses of Chippenham for inclusion as part of an historical record housed in the archive of the Heritage Centre. This project assisted them in defining their career objectives and provided an initial credit for their C.V.
I have been asked to advise on photographic recording policy by major institutions of both corporate and educational stature. And, have been a course reader for a university photographic degree course.
My first book, Photographing Historic Buildings, was on the reading lists for building conservation courses at universities in the USA and Canada and was a best seller. The second book, William Hayes - York Photographic Artist, was as a result of the chance discovery of a studio in a remote part of the North York Moors. This publication was instrumental in a collection of photographs, of immense social historical record of a rural way of life, being purchased for the nation and the saving and re-building of an early and original photographer's studio in the grounds of a local museum.
I continue to paint and have studied printmaking at the City of Bath College and at the Porthmeor printmakers workshop in St Ives, Cornwall. I started this pursuit after a conversation with Michael Rothenstein at his studio in Essex.
My printmaking tutors were Naomi Frears, Rachael Kantaris and Mary Crockett.
My continuing work has been in the form of poetry and articles illustrated with drawings and photography. Much of this has been published in the U.K., U.S.A., Canada and Finland.
