Artist statement
Concepts
My work has consistently sought to interrogate the experience of living, of 'being', through architecture's latent symbolism. Embedded meanings expressed through such oppositional properties as permanence or impermanence, spiritual or secular and in which walls delineate lines of inclusion and exclusion and the building acts as metaphor for 'self' defining interior and exterior or subjective and objective worlds.
The early 'material structures' realised through industrial engineering techniques have gradually evolved toward process based working in which computer technology, narrative filmmaking, site-specific installation and landscaping have fed into a wide range of commissions.
Since 2001 I have been working on large scale projects in the public realm where the imperatives of regeneration and sustainability produce challenging narratives of decay and renewal. A role in which I have embraced the collaborative negotiation of Urban Design as a productive creative force, aligned with in-depth research – frequently teaming up with members of the scientific community in such diverse fields as space, microbiology and acoustics in order to develop stimulating new works in response to the elaborating urban landscape and architectural schemes.
Exhibited internationally and in the UK and continues to produce work for both gallery and public spaces.
