Artist statement
Julie McCalden operates in an areana of exchange where everything is in a perpetual state of becoming. She actively seeks new ways of working and imposes no artifical restrictions on her practice. There is always a political undercurrent to the work; her use of everyday materials and products from low popular culture, which she subjects to labourious processes, invite questions of work, value and time. Her interest in commercial imagery examines notions of desire while camouflage techniques bring interpretations of truth, reality and the ambiguousness of art itself as a medium capable of revealing hidden meanings to the fore.
