Artist statement

My work takes form through a gradual accumulation of ideas, research, found and gathered material and experimental processes. The outcomes of this cumulative process range from carefully crafted artefacts and drawings to texts, photographs, videos and installation. Although my practice progresses through several different strands, at the heart of all of the work is an exploration of the world we live in and our often uneasy relationship with it. Sometimes ideas are explored through histories and narrative, both real and imagined, at other times through scientific research and pseudo-scientific investigations.

My recent research has focused on man’s ambivalent realtionship with the natural world and the fundamental wonder, fear and awe engendered by it. I am interested in the notion of nature out of control despite (or because of?) our attempts to control and manipulate the world we live in. My work is informed by a diverse range of sources including film and literature including writers such as John Wyndham, artists from da Vinci to Dion, Ackroyd & Harvey to Anya Gallaccio, and by reference to the ever advancing world of contemporary bio-science, genetic engineering and synthetic biology and the moral and ethical debates surrounding these sciences.
