Artist statement

Over the past one or two years I have been working on the concept of speed. Not the least against the background of the writings of the contemporary French philosopher Paul Virilio. In my work I currently investigate into the notion of the destruction of space through military technologies and concepts of virtual reality - two aspects of speed that are not too far apart really. 'Speed' in this context symbolises the idea of 'constant arrival' as provided by internet and virtual realities - with rates of speed increasing to almost the speed of light (electronic impulses), the aforementioned technologies enable the individual to access virtual spaces without having to visit the actual, physical space that they stand for (hence the destruction of space).

The CNN series for example is based on pictures of attacks by fighter jets and 'intelligent' weapons as prominently featured on CNN during the Iraq war, whereas the subsequent series, 'Torp' is a minimalist approach to dealing with one of the focal points of speed vectors in modern society, i.e. airports.
