Stuart Simpson

Artist, Consultant, Arts development worker, Researcher

My practice has taken a variety of forms including theatre, musical composition, internet performance and digital installation. Having previously experienced life as a recording artist in bands both in the UK and the USA, I returned to education gaining a 1st class BA in Performing Arts and a Masters with distinction in Contemporary Art. I was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy from Nottingham Trent University for research into tourist performativity, digital ethnography and art practice. My interests are in the familiar; from the performance of the smile for tourist photography; mediumistic processes and spirit guides; tourist mementos and mantlepiece shrines; to the day-to-day existence of living with neighbours. My work has been supported financially through grants from the Arts and Humanities Research Council, Arts Council England and local government. Recent projects have been in schools, nursing and care homes. The central feature to this work has been the documentation and re-presentation of personal history and the celebration of life experience. Portrait photography and sound recordings have been used to explore themes such as identity, community and social and cultural history. My current teaching is in the areas of photography, interactive media and critical practice in both higher and further education. read full statement
