The relationship between the past and the present fascinates me. The universal issues and narratives communicated within the appropriated mythologies of historic paintings can easily find reverence in the modern. Using contemporary images and familiar modern aesthetics this idea becomes more accessible to the viewer. Playing with varying degrees of artistic submissiveness and authority whilst planning paintings, I dictate how submissive or authoritative the audience may be through interpretation. This completes a dualistic relationship between artist and audience which more recently has found symbolic representation in the relationships formed between individuals from art history and contemporary culture on the canvas - illustrating a struggle where equilibrium in theory would be best but is not always possible, and is definitely not nearly as interesting. read full statement
