Russell Gilder

Artist, Teacher

My art practice primarily consists of drawing, painting and printmaking, derived from the ancient woodland landscapes of England and Wales, particularly Mortimer Forest, South Shropshire.

My work has been an exploration of a twilight world that lives between the conscious and the ephemeral, a place that exists within me and within the countryside I explore. Much of my work does not follow a linear path.

Many of the themes I use in my drawings and paintings are constantly revisited, reworking and developing my original ideas further. Compositions such as Archway, Estuary and Dark Woods have been subjects I have come back to many times.

I am currently working on a series of large paintings. The content is a mixture of revisited ideas and new themes linked to the landscape and within this context I see the work following in a tradition of Romantic Landscape imagery.
