Russell Gilder has been a practising artist for 20 years, having studied at the School of Fine Art in Birmingham completing the BA Fine Art Degree in 1996.
He states that his art practice primarily consists of drawing, painting and printmaking, derived from the ancient woodland landscapes of England and Wales, particularly Mortimer Forest, South Shropshire.
His work has been an exploration of a twilight world that lives between the conscious and the ephemeral, a place that exists within the artist and within the countryside he explores.
Much of his work follows a variety of subject motifs within the landscape. Many of the themes he uses in his drawings and paintings are constantly revisited, reworked and developed. Compositions such as Archway, Estuary and Dark Woods are subjects he has come back to many times.
He has exhibited extensively in this country and abroad and his work is held in private and public collections. His work has also been accepted in major art competitions such as the Hunting Prize, Discerning Eye, Lynn Stainer Painters Prize, shortlisted for the John Moores painting Prize and exhibited and sold at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition.
Russell is currently working on a series of large paintings. The content is a mixture of revisited ideas and new themes linked to the landscape and within this context he sees the work following in a tradition of Romantic Landscape imagery.
