My current practice examines how far I can scientifically generate genuine emotions by manipulating the senses through a work of art by fully immersing an audience in that work of art, employing all the senses in a single purpose. I make performance/video installations in specifically designed spaces. With a background in Theatre and Architecture, I design from both perspectives. Spaces which dictate action and actions that dictate space. These spaces are immersive to remove the audience from the external environment and concentrate them upon specific stimuli, often in the context of narrative. I spent 2011 in Italy and France, learning the languages in the contexts of their cultures. It is compelling to see how language facilitates or limits thought. I am also interested in how indirect the process of transforming text into meaning is and yet it is one of the most effective arts for provoking emotion. The narrative in my work tests these constraints. I am interested in the moving image, especially used in combination with other media. I am experimenting with expanding film into a space. I examine space in motion by drawing, cutting sections through and making 3D models of film. From Architecture and Theatre I learnt to bring different elements together to make a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. Also having studied Maths and Physics I am able to combine analytical thinking with a sensitivity to aesthetics so that the Art and Science aspects of my work are not distinct, but come together as a complete entity. My practice is collaborative and inquiry based on both the Art and the Science sides so that each informs the other. I am investigating Art as a means of communicating something that cannot be conveyed in any other way,challenging the notion that Art is completely subjective by making it a means to a specific end, an emotion, rather than a point of departure for individual interpretation.
