Biography

In my recent work I've been inspired by recurring themes in the European pictorial tradition. I've produced a series of photographic and video portraits that re-enact Renaissance works in a non-literal way, in an attempt to reconcile them with a contemporary sensitivity. 'Vision is question and response', writes Maurice Merleau-Ponty. By adding duration to a still image or by making characters and genders interchangeable, I intent to amplify the viewer's self-consciousness of his/her own act of looking and his/her own preconceptions.
